07 Leelanau County Breed Bird Survey Commentary

After the name of each species on this BB Survey list is a breeding criteria code.  The Breeding Criteria Codes are quite accurate.  In the column after that is a number  which , if 5 or under, is probably pretty accurate in terms of number observed.  However the numbers given “may” have more relevance in regards to the relative abundance of each species observed.

1. Species that are  Endangered that were observed in Leelanau County are:  the Piping Plover and the Prairie Warbler.

2. Species that are threatened that were observed in the county are:

Common Loon, Osprey, Bald Eagle, Red-shouldered Hawk, Merlin, and Caspian Tern.

3. Species of special concern that were observed in the county are:  Northern Harrier, Cooper’s Hawk, Northern Goshawk,  and Grasshopper Sparrow.
